New area codes will be introduced this year in Ontario, and across Canada. The changes that will take place in the areas currently served by the 905/289 and 416/647 area codes in Ontario. The map below shows all the changes across Canada:

Canada area code map

The introduction of these new area codes is the result of decisions by the Canadian Radio-Television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) in response to the increased demand for communications services.  The new area codes will allow for the creation of millions of new telephone numbers.

Introducing a new area code in a region already served by another code creates only minor changes.  Adding an area code using the overlay method does not cause any numbers to change for current customers.  Below are key highlights of the new area codes:

  • Only new telephone numbers are affected by this addition
  • Existing telephone numbers keep the same area code and do not change in any way
  • Local calling areas remain the same
  • The 9-1-1 emergency number remains a three-digit number throughout the area
